How to talk about homelessness.

Talking about homelessness may feel challenging, but greater understanding leads to greater compassion. When you learn something that changes how you think about people experiencing homelessness, share it. If it gave you a new perspective, it will probably do the same for someone else.

When speaking about the topic, try not to refer to “the homeless” in broad terms, and instead humanize the individual people who are facing housing insecurity, remembering that everyone’s circumstances are different. The challenges associated with losing one’s home and overcoming homelessness are great. A little compassion and kindness can help in more ways than you may realize.
