Why would someone sleep on the street rather than a homeless shelter?

Each person’s circumstances are unique, but those who have experienced the shelter system often cite the chaotic environment, crowded sleeping arrangements, and the various rules and restrictions that make day-to-day responsibilities a challenge:

  • A curfew can interfere with an evening or overnight job, forcing you to choose between a job and a bed.
  • Many shelters restrict the amount of personal belongings residents can have to one or two bags total.
  • Few shelters are able to accommodate pets, including service animals, which may mean abandoning your dog or cat in order to secure shelter for yourself.

No one chooses to sleep on the street, but for some people experiencing homelessness, it may be the best option.
