What does it mean to be rent-burdened?
More than 19 million 10 Americans are “rent-burdened,” meaning they spend more than 30% of their income on housing costs—and millions of those individuals are “severely rent-burdened,” meaning more than half of their income goes to housing costs.
In New York City—one of the most expensive housing markets in the world—more than half of all New Yorkers are rent-burdened, while 1 in 3 renters 11 are severely rent-burdened and in danger of missing rent payments and/or facing eviction.
